Lanny, The things that you describe tend to be in the nature of that beast. For some reason that motor tends to be a hard starter. I had an 826 that was hard to start and smokes just like you said. It also had an oily slime on the outlet of the muffler and on the raincap. This led me to believe that I was either burning oil or sending raw fuel up the exhaust. The tractor did not burn oil so I looked at fuel system. I had the pump rebuilt and put all new injectors in it. That stopped the slobbering and a made it a little easier to start, but it still smoked. Several people told me that an 826 just needs the snot worked out of it once and a while to clean things out good. I would say this could especially be the case with a fresh overhaul on it. I wouldn't worry too much. The 826 is a good tractor. The 358 just tends to be kind of a dirty motor.
