While thankfully I missed all the "hubbub" about "Rogers books", I was somewhat less thankful not to be spared one of his books for a Christmas present, something to the effect of "Love, $ex and old Tractors" or something like that designed to be deceitfully titallating by a family member who knew I had an interest in old tractors and mistakenly thought such a book would either prove helpful or amusing.
I won't take the time to fall all over myself to pretend they were well written or insightful. Anyone who finds them to be such, is stretching an interest in tractors and politely trying to marry it with a "grasping at straws" approach to humor. I certainly would not recommend them to anyone who is a serious tractor enthusiast...and even less so to anyone with a sense of humor.
In place of any useful information, tips or insights, the book was chock full of fluff, foam and strained advice on how to organize your shop, politically correct rehashes on how to dispose of chemicals and gradeschool humor on various misadventures that anyone who owns a lawnmower became familiar with by the second year of ownership. I was soon wearied to the point of tears by his high adventures in tearing into his beloved Allis Chalmers brake shoes...Lord help anyone who needs any real advice on say for example, body work, such essential advice to a serious restoration was sadly lacking. Many are the readers who are going to come up sadly disappointed.
To my regret I struggled through the book in its entirety, but in the end was able to take a measure of comfort by relegating it to the trash bin where it so richly deserves to be ensconced.
At least I can take some comfort in the fact that the book was a gift as opposed to having bought it on my own. It is a mistake that I certainly won't repeat at my own expense.
Welshes books are a classic case of "The Emporers New Clothes" in which nothing was delivered but everyone is too embarrassed to admit they've been had and takes the position that the book was very "funny" and "well written" just because it dealt with the subject of old tractors.

Today's Featured Article - The Engine Rebuild Kit - by Curtis Von Fange. I always liked engine rebuild kits. They have all the replacement parts for overhauling an engine without going to the store to get gaskets, special measuring tools, or miscellaneous parts. They come neatly packaged, clean and tidy. But it's important not to let that packaging lull you into a false sense of security. The appearance of matching sleeves, pistons, rings, and bearings can cause frustration and agony if not properly measured and installed in a workshop environment. Following c ... [Read Article]
