Tim: There's been a few discussions here lately on this same basic topic--the thing to keep in mind is that horsepower can be a slippery subject. While the science involved is pretty straightforward, the measurement techniques used can vary widely. A car engine's rated horsepower is frequently its maximum horsepower, which has very little to do with the price of tea in China, and even less to do with the amount of useful work it will produce. As a previous poster mentioned, a tractor engine will typically produce a broader, flatter torque curve, leading to more useful work across a wider RPM range. Car engines often have to rev higher to produce the same gross horsepower, and often suffer from poor low-end performance, as they have been optimized for being driven closer to the mid-to-high end of their RPM range. This is hardly an exhaustive handling of the subject (which could and has filled several books!) but it's at least a capsule summary of the difference.
