If your choice is between a 1586 and a 5488, definitaly go with the 5488! 1586: only has 3 gears (plus hi and low and TA - 12 total forward speeds possible - TA is powershifted, but other gears are not synchronized) 63 gallon fuel tank 161 horsepower on the PTO 138 on drawbar Turbo Diesel of 436 cubic inches weighs 13,300 lbs 5488: 3 ranges and 6 gears in each range (1-2, 3-4, and 5-6 powershifted, 2-3 and 4-5 are synchronized) 87 gallon fuel tank 187 horsepower on the PTO 164 on drawbar Turbo Diesel Intercooled of 466 cubic inches weighs 14,600 lbs Other items of interest: the 5488 has reverse cooling, blows air out the front of the radiator. The radiator plugs less on these, but I have heard of fan bearing problems. 1586 shifting is on the left hand side and hydraulics on the right, 5488 shifting is on the right hand side (don't remember where hydraulic controls are). Both have doors on both sides, both available with 3-point. Both should/could have 20.8x38 tires. Both have proven IH DT-400 series engines (be sure to change the coolant filter/treatment or they will cavitate). Just a few specs and some personal preferences.

It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro
