Tim, K.B. did a good job of explaining what a pushrod engine is. Main point of what I was trying to make is that I used to be able to lift and carry the short block on that engine (short block means with the head off) -- not far, and not high, as I'm not that strong a guy. But it is possible. So what I'd do is unbolt the head where it lies (intake and exhaust manifold plus head - whatever is there) then take off the water pump and flywheel, distributor, etc. and give it a try to see if you can lift it. If you're not as crazy as I used to be - pull the oil pan and unbolt the five mains and the four rods and pull the crank. By that time you should just be able to pick up the block and place it on your favorite - sturdy - workbench. From there, all you're doing is pulling the pistons and cam - if it's a push rod - if it's OHC, the cam came off with the head. You might need some leverage here and there when you reassemle the short block and you may eventually want to get an engine stand and a hoist - but as you said you had no experience doing these kinds of things and weren't sure what you were going to do with it, you might want to limit your expenses up front until the whole project looks like it's going to work. good luck with it Steve

At one time I had seven restored examples which were shown and used in ploughing matches. As most restorers, I have a number of war stories I can relate on a range of topics that may help other like minded and interested people. Perhaps my first p
