By all means, let somebody get some good out of the materials in the barn if you are not. A barn ussually has alot of good lumber in it, especially if it is framed and not a pole shed. In my area, a good barn to be torn down is sold and not just given away. Try dealing with somebody that you know instead of a complete stranger. That will help greatly in the liability area as well as how the area is left when completed. I wouldn't be to worried about the liability issue with someone I knew. Ussually the property owner has to deal with the foundation after building is removed. Ussually there is always a little debree left after building is torn down, so you may want to have an agreement on this before hand. As for having the fire department burn it down as someone else mentioned, our local fire department won't. There insurance company won't let them becuase they are only insured for putting fires out, and don't have coverage to cover fires that they light, or voluntarily let them burn thereselves out. If it was me and I had some spare time, I would tear it down myself. The lumber in that barn is probably much better than new lumber at the lumber store if the roof has been kept up on that old barn. You could then use the lumber in the new house.
