The down side to adding ATF to your diesel is that it doesn't burn completly. It leaves ash as a contaminant in the engine. Winter gelling problems in diesel are due to wax crystals. In colder temps, the crystals clump together/get larger and plug filters, lines, etc. I used to sell fuel conditioners and lubricants, but here in TX there wasn't much need for the extreme temp formulations that are used up where you guys are.
