I have always been told/taught that a corn picker is the most dangerous farm implement becuase of its countless moving parts, readiness to have "minor" problems that create teh temptation to stick a hand where it probably shouldn't go. I think Hugh said it right, dangerous people create dangerous machines. While picking corn for a friend this December, I was told a story while on maintance break about someone who used to custom pick the same field I was on for the same guy (the storyteller). This particular person would drink until he was so drunk he would fall down walking out of the porch of the storyteller's house. Although drunk, he hopped on his tractor and was determined to continue picking. Actually was able to keep a pretty steady row, too, but was still tipsy. Just to humor himself, my friend just stood in his yard and watched the drunk pick corn. Somewhere between the head and the husking bed, the picker plugged. The no-less-drunk man stopped the tractor, shut it off, and fixed the problem. He stumbled back to the tractor, started it back up, and continued. The moral of the story: Even as drunk as he was, he still shut off the tractor when he was going to get off of it. After 20 years of custom picking, he still had all 10 fingers. A safe operator = safe operation. Hands down.
