Bill ,kerosene is what you use in the crank case to clean it out. If the crank case holds 4qts of oil put 3in and 1 qt of kerosene run the eng not long then drain it out.Don't want to wipe out any bearings.RPM is correct, get what you can from the pan.I would even go as far as removing the dome cover and clean what I could off the top of the eng,(with the pan off)useing brakeclean or kerosene,also clean off the screen on the oil pump sump. when you get this all done put the pan back on,I would use permatex so you won't be wasting gaskets, leave the dome cover off or loose so you could remove it when the eng is running, making sure that your getting oil on top,you may have to do this a couple times depending on how bad your eng is.
