Jeff: I don't think I would be afraid to try for 75 HP, as Wardner said 660 is same engine turning at 2400 rpm. 706 was another 282 diesel turning 2400 and standard pto at 2300 rpm. It also was in the 75 hp range. My 560 was turning 2200 rpm. My tractor was on its second set of pistons and sleeves, and I can tell you this, they were after market.

The problem with this engine and the 188 diesel in 504 which is just a 4 cylinder version of same engine, is just this; the sleeves break near the top and piston draws them down into crank case. Some have been luckey in that it did no sreious damage to block. Probably a lot of this has a bearing on rpm when it happens. I really never looked closely at my engine as in 1978 dealer wanted $4,000. for a short block and I could not see putting that kind of dollars in 1978 into a tractor without 3 point hitch

There have been several discussions on here in past 5 years, when some one had this happen. I can't tell you if they were all after market pistons. I have always wondered that about my tractor. I also had a 282 engine in a 656 which was never tampered with on injection pump. 65 hp and it ran forever, I know it is still going and probably close to 20,000 hours on it.
