Jeff - First check to see if you are getting spark out of the coil. Pull the hot wire from the center of the distributor, attach it to a spark plug and lay the plug top of the coil. Then turn on the ignition and open the points by hand. If you get a hot spark at the plug, somehow your distributor has gotten out of time. If not the above, perhaps your new coil is a so-called "12 volt" coil? If yes, a ballast resistor is unnecessary. Including it in the circuit will drop the primary current too low to give a decent spark. Try bypassing the resistor and see if you get a spark. If you do, and the primary current (measured with the engine off) is less than about 4 amps, simply get rid the ballast resistor. If not the above, other possibilities are a bad (or poorly grounded) condensor or a bad coil. Good luck!
