A bit of information for anyone who is interested.
To determine dwell for an engine, divide the degrees of a circle by the # of cylinders. (360 / 6 = 60) for example. Then multiply the answer by 2/3. In the case of the example 6 cylinder engine, the dwell will be 40 degrees.
An 8 cylinder engine has a dwell of 30 degrees and a 4 cylinder engine should have a dwell of 60 degrees.
Dwell is the amount of time (expressed in degrees of distributor rotation) that the points are closed allowing electricity to build magnetism in the coil which then produces the spark at the instant the points open.
This is a long answer for a simple question, but who ever said things were simple??
