No pony motor on any old Farmall diesels that I know of. The MD starts by switching the diesel engine so it will run on gasoline. Third valve in the head is opened to a chamber in head to reduce compression. the chamber contains a spark plug. Manifold has a carburetor that is isolated by butterfly valves during diesel operation. Also there is a magneto for the ignition. You start on gas let the engine warm and then switch it to diesel. This system was used in most all early IH diesels, including larger equipment like road graders and dozers. The IH diesel engine in the MD was the smallest of the IH gas start diesels.
