I just recently built a new wiring harness for my Father's "A". His original headlights & rear light were long gone, so he bought replacements. I did not take them apart but believe they are sealed beam types. His setup is an all original 6V pos. ground system and has the original Low charge/High charge/Dim/Bright rotary switch. To make the front headlights dim, the switch simply puts a resistor(looks like a coil of wire) in series with the headlights. When I wired this all up & turned the lights on, the resistor became VERY (red) hot & began smoking. I concluded that I had wired everything correctly & that the problem was that the new headlights draw much more current than the originals did (they draw about 2.5 amps each). I rewired the switch so now there is no dim position. These lights are very bright. Any comments? Did I miss something here? If not, you guys might want to be careful when replacing headlights, you could burn up all the wiring inside the electrical box. My Father mailed ordered the headlights from one of the vendors that advertises on the web. They came complete with a red metal housing and were advertised as replacement headlight assemblies for "A"s.
