Right you are! Here are a few pour point temps that I looked up. By the way, the pumping point is about 10 degrees (f) warmer, so don't just think you have it made if the pour point is below your usual winter temperatures. 10w30 mineral oils: Penzoil - -27 Havoline - -45 Citgo - -22 Shell - -36 Castrol (Syntec) -27 Some SAE 30 mineral oils I looked up have pour points around 0. This means these just won't do the job once the temperatures go below 10 degrees. I looked up several synthetic oils. The worst case pour point I found was -44. The best was nearly -70. On average, synthetics had pour points of around -54. These were in a 10w30 viscosity. If you really care, go to the web page for whatever oil you are using. You can find the above information in the spec sheets. As you can see above, all oils do not have the same pour points - even when comparing the same viscosity.
