The 544 is a little more tractor. A 504 is pretty much just an updated 340, while the 544 is a 656 with a four-cylinder engine. The TA, trans., and rear end are about the same between a 504 and 544 gear-drive. 544 had the optional Hydrostatic transmission. Power steering was optional on the 504, while 544 had standard hydrostatic (no mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and front bolster, just hydraulic lines) power steering, exactly like what you would find on the big 06, 26, and 56 series tractors. A 504 with power steering has a shaft running down to the front bolster, like a 460 or 560. Like Steven says, the 504 Row-Crop wide front end was that awful one with the tie-rods out front. My 240 has this front end, and I don't like it much, it doesn't give you a tight turning radius. 544 Row-Crop has the 06, 26, 56 series front end. I belive that the 504 Utility and 544 Utility have the same swept-back front end. Engines are a big difference, too. 504 has a C-153 gas, which is very similar to the C-123 found in a Super C. 504 diesel has a D-188, which is the four-cylinder version of the D-282 found in the 560 (has glow-plugs). 544 gas has the C-200, which I belive (but not 100% sure), is the four-cylinder version of the C-301, found in the 806. 544 diesel has the D-239, which is the four-cylinder version of the D-358 German Diesel, which is one of the best engines IH ever built as far as long life and fuel economy goes.
