Most modern oils are detergents, if they aren't it should be marked very clearly. What the detergent does is keep the sludge and sediment that forms in suspension so it is filtered out or comes out when you change the oil as opposed to settling on the engine surfaces. If you have a newly rebuilt engine or one that has been running detergent previously then you should use detergent oil. If it has been running non-detergent then the engine will need to be cleaned out before you switch otherwise all the crud can come loose at once and plug up the oil passages. Hope this helps.
