I would sure recommend buying the German diesel if you buy a diesel. It is a well made engine but if you ever have trouble with it parts are pretty pricey. The American diesel is a gas block with only four main bearings and they hold up ok if you do not load them very much. The glow plugs are what really kill that engine for me. It's just always something that keeps it from starting easy. Never had a gasoline 706 but ran two different ones on LP for years and years. Only trouble that I had with it was burning valves when you work them with a four inch flame coming out the exhaust for ten hours straight. Started using low ash engine oil and that corrected that problem.
