All the MDs I have seen you push the starting switch over lever forward to get the engine in the gasoline starting mode. It should latch in the forward position. Four things happen when you change to gas position. 1. the decompression valves in the head are opened. 2. the ignition is switched on so the plugs will get a spark (the switch for this is in a chamber in the front end of the intake manifold. 3. butterflys in the manifold are positioned so that air can flow though the carburetor. and 4. The carburetor float is released so gas can flow. In diesel position, the float is locked up to stop gas from flowing. The diesel speed control lever should be in the shut off position (down) for starting in gas mode. Once you are running on gas and the engine has had a few minutes to warm, pull back the switch over lever and at the same time advance the diesel speed control to around mid range. Puff of smoke and a roar and you are running on diesel. To shut down, reverse the procedure to get back running on gas, turn off the gas to the carb and let the gas run out until it dies. Then put the change over lever back to diesel so the decompression valves and cool while seated. If not seated, they can warp. I should also note that in gas mode, the only engine control is the choke. You may have to fiddle with the choke as the engine warms. If you need to change the throttle setting for gasoline, you have to remove and take apart the carburetor.

Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
