That guy at NAPA is full of crap! (He should stick to selling mudflaps or something....) A generator/alternator will bring a dead flat battery back to full charge. Done it myself many times. Depending on the amp-hr cpacity of the battery and the generator/alternator rating, this could take anywhere from a half hour to several hours of running. Be aware however of one peculiarity of most alternator systems: They will not charge a dead flat battery (one with 0 volts showing at the terminals). The battery must show at least few volts, or will need a momentary "flash" of 12 volts from another sourch to provide sufficient field current for the alternator to begin charging. Generator systems on the other hand do not have this limitation.
