Oat hay is easily grown and is readily consumed. I prefer to drill grain as opposed to broadcasting. Your 140 could power a small square baler if you don't crowd it. I do caution you as to where you store the baled hay as it is a major attractant to rats and mice. You will want to use man made twine as the rats don't chew it as they do the natural twine. Here in NC we fertilize at planting (either in the Fall or Spring) with a balanced fertilizer and topdress with nitrogen later. We do not feed barley hay to horses so if you are going to feed them you need to plant straight oats and maybe overseed the young oats with clover for additional hay or ground improvement.
