You may have a stuck or bent valve, given what you said earlier about the push rod falling out. If the valve stuck in the open position, there would be no tension on the rocker arm to keep the push rod in place. So the push rod fell out. The valve got hit by the piston comming up and bent the valve, and may have damaged the piston too. So every time the piston comes up, it makes contact with the valve and makes the loud metallic sound you are talking about. My suggestion is that you remove the head and inspect the valves and tops of the pistons for damage. The last thing you want to do is put bearings back in the beast and then have a piston crack and take out the crankshaft or rods. Don't put used bearings from one engine into another. The wear patterns will not match up and you will be tearing the engine back down and re-grinding the crankshaft. If your crankshaft looks good, just clean up the journals and put new mains & rod bearings in it. You never said how much oil pressure the engine was running before this happened. Do you have a working oil pressure guage on the engine?? If not, spend the money and get one so you can see what is happening. Good luck ,and keep us posted on what you find.
