Properly maintained and cared for, the MD is a good machine. I have talked to people who put 12,000 hours on between overhauls with few problems. An M diesel is not really stronger than a gas M. They just run on diesel. If you want a lot stronger tractor, move up to a 706 or 806. The M through 560 used basically the same transmission and rearend with updates. If you don't want to move up to the 706/806 but still want stronger and more features, the 400 and 450 were powerful, reliable tractors. As for any of the IH start on gas diesels giving someone a multitude of problems, if they have ever been run incorrectly or abused they will be expensive to fix and maintain. Chances are, most of them have been abused in the 40 or so years since they were new. My $0.02 worth.
