Robert, The IH TA is a planatery reduction system. The output shaft from the main clutch goes to the Secondary (TA) clutch. When in direct drive the secondary clutch is closed and the entire planatary TA unit rotates at the same rpm as the fly wheel. When you pull the TA lever back you open TA clutch allowing the rotating power to go through the planatery gear set. To stop the counter rotation of the TA planatery gear set that is where the overrun clutch (ramp and roller or sprague lock up) comes in. The TA lever operation is no different that the main clutch. You wouldn't just slid your foot side way off your clutch dumping it. Its no different with the TA clutch. Let it forward smoothly and quickly not droped. I have three 1956 tractors with TA that I have not had a problem with. I about 100 hr per month or more on these tractors and use the TAs all the time. One important item that you don't want to forget if you rebuild your TA is the TA through out bearing. This is a large seal bearing and will run many many hours. This bearing runs all the time when on the Low side of the TA. I have changed from the ramp and roller to the spraque lock up on all three of mine and the work flawlessly.
