Keith - I presume you are talking about the headlamp dimmer resistor on the light switch. If it's broke at either end you can probably get by using a crimp (not solder) connector - just make sure it's cleaned up good and crimped hard. Regarding your ballast resistor question, you can check 'em with an ohmmeter. If the meter shows open circuit (infinite resistance) the resistor is NG. If it shows a couple ohms or so the resistor is OK. If you don't have an ohmmeter, you can test by wiring the resistor in series with a 12 volt brake light or backup light bulb, then appling 12 volts across the combination. If the bulb lights at about 1/2 normal brightness, the resistor is OK.
