I like the 282 diesel. I had a 560 and a 656, they were very fuel efficient. I think possibly the 282 was a little light for 706. I like a diesel that operates in the 1500 to 2000 rpm range. I was trying to help a guy month ago, John Deere 404 engine. He was jump starting every day. I put vise grips on three of terminals and machine started without boost. I told him to get a new set of factory original battery cables. He went out and bought two new batteries and I see same old cables. I suspect he is about 3 weeks away from once again jump starting every morning. I had a set of batteries, six years in tractor. In late fall I noticed starter cranking slow. I put a set of factory cables on and tractor started every day that winter. It was only two years later I replaced batteries. I have a 10 year old battery in my SA now, I know it started at -15 to -20 couple of times last winter. I don't use tractors every day anymore. Since being away from farming I have driven a few of the highway tractors. Those Cat and Cummins engines that are geared to run the highway at 60 mph and turning only 1650 rpm and running around 500 hp are something else. You can lug them to a 1000 rpm on ice and snowy roads and they will recover without shifting. Just past Fri running dump truck, DT466, two of us, same number of loads on same road. Trucks are governed at 2700 rpm. I rarely exceed 2000 rpm, other guy is on the mat all the time. At end of day I took 150L of fuel he was over 200L. We worked same hours
