I know I haven't had much time to chime in here lately with the almost four month old boy at home and being busy at work, but on the eve of Sept 11 I just wanted to drop a line to say a few words. As a career firefighter, people in my community have been very supportive this year. We have received baked goods and other food, thanks from members of the public, and have finally earned a little of the respect that I feel we deserve. I know many of you have supported your local fire departments and rescue squads just as my community has supported us, and on behalf of the firefighting profession I would like to say "Thanks" for all the cookies, cards, encouragement, waves as you pass by, and prayers.

Please be safe in whatever you do. Drive carefully and sober, and put fresh batteries in your smoke detectors. Buy fire extinguishers for your shops. Don't leave the coffee pot on. As much as I love to fight fire, I hate to see someone's possessions go up in flames. Believe it or not, with all the respect we have been getting from the public this year many firefighters are beginning to respect the public more. We generally deal with drunks, arsonists and the like and many firefighters have a poor opinion of the public. We are finally realizing that most people are good, God fearing, hard working taxpayers just like us, only difference is their(your)taxes pay us!

I realize this is off topic, but I feel I have many friends on this board and I have enjoyed your company over the past few years. May God bless all of you with health, happiness, and, of course, FARMALLS!

Fireman
