In our community we had neighbors who had Case diesels to start during thunderstorms. One was out of gear and no damage done. Other one was in shed and engine died when struck a post. on the later one the starter solenoid was ruined. Never heard of a gasoline engine starting in this way but would not consider it to be impossible
