Dick - very interesting question regarding old equipment and newer equipment. On our farm equipment, we use regular hydraulic fluid on hydraulic systems which do not have hydrostatic drives. On hydraulic systems with hydrostatic drives, we use Hy Trans or AW46. Regular hydraulic fluid is cheaper than AW46 or Hytrans and workd just as well for cylinder movement and motors. We use AW46 in all the newer tractors. The older pumps such as M&W or Bee Gee were intended to use SAE 30 wt. This oil has a heavier viscosity and works well with pumps with loose tolerances. HyTrans should work in all pumps but the viscosity is less than SAE30wt. As the oil heats ups, the viscosity is reduced and the oil literaly slips in the pump causing excessive heat and lack of oil flow. I suspect that the M&W pump is probably tired which causes your problems. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

At one time I had seven restored examples which were shown and used in ploughing matches. As most restorers, I have a number of war stories I can relate on a range of topics that may help other like minded and interested people. Perhaps my first p
