Alternator hookup M

A 12 volt neg ground Delco Remy alternator is already in place. A plug comes out of the alternator with a white wire and a red wire. The white wire is hooked to a post marked "Bat" and a wire runs to the neg. side of the ampmeter. The red wire has a diode and I hooked it directly to the battery. It charged fine, but I noticed when the motor was turned off, there was a drain on the battery. Do I need a cutoff switch? Some kind of regulator? A different hook up ?
