How are you shutting it down? Recommended practice is to run it on gas till the carb is empty thereby allowing the engine to cool and purge out any diesel fuel that might be in there. Mine smokes a bit on gas at first too but after 20 to 30 seconds it clears up, then I switch to diesel and shut it down on gas. You may have leaky valve guides allowing motor oil into cylinder or your throttle may not be shutting off diesel fuel to injectors. The throttle should be fully closed when starting on gas.
