Kirk - Do like Scotty suggests and do the simple stuff first: Check the belt tension. Also make sure all connections are clean and tight, and that the regulator is solidly grounded. If that doesn't do it, temporarily jumper the generator "F" terminal to a good ground then run the motor at about 1/2 throttle. If the ammeter now shows a charge, the regulator is at fault and should be replaced. If it still indicates low or no charge, the problem's with the generator. If the problem is the generator, it's likely a stuck brush or worn brushes/commutator. Could also be an improperly adjusted 3rd brush. However by 1953 generators were equpped with a fixed (non-adjustable) 3rd brush. So if your Cub has the orginal generator, adjusting the 3rd brush will not be an option for you.
