No forward or reverse unless right brake applied

While dragging a log out of the woods yesteday I lost all forward and reverse motion. I first suspected that my clutch went but after checking that out I realized that when I put it into gear there was still gear clash so I knew I had power into the transmission. For some reason I applied the brakes and felt a wiggle and after further expereimentation I found that by applying the right brake the left wheel would engauge and I was able to get the tractor to level ground to fasilitate repair. Any ideas on what let go?
