cub sicle bar

I have a '47 cub with an original sicle bar. This morning I broke! The long shaft that runs from the rear pulley to the small "fly-wheel" somehow backed out of the fly-wheel. Nothing was damaged as far as I can tell. My problem is I don't see how it ever stayed in there! There does not seem to be anything that holds it in. Do you just drive the key in and wedge it in place? I looked at the back pulley and there does not seem to be anything back there to keep the shaft from sliding out the back. I'm stumped. Any help would be appreciated. I actually had to use the weed-whacker. I'd much rather use the cub....
