Well, I can give you the basic info. The 656 came out in 1965, in gear drive, with the paint/styling of a 706, and with a C-263 gas engine or a D-282 diesel. In 1967, a Hydro drive model became avalible. A little later that year, the paint and grill were changed to match the rest of the 56 series. In about 1972 or 73, the 666 replaced the 656, same basic tractor, Hydro trans was still avalible, the big difference was the grill and paint, and the engines were now a C-291 or a D-312. Soon after, the 666 Hydro was dropped and replaced by the Hydro 70, due to confusion about the horsepower difference between gear drive and Hydro models. In 1976, the 666 and Hydro 70 were replaced by the 686 and Hydro 86, the only difference was the paint job. In about 1979, the D-312 engine was replaced by the D-310 German Diesel. In the early 80's, IH dropped this line of tractors. We have a '79 686 with the D-310, and it's got to be the most versitile tractor we've got. I would guess the reason you didn't see any at the show is because 656's are too good of a work tractor to be sitting at a show.
