Ralph, I have looked in the parts manual, the fuel sending unit appears to be a viariable resistor. IF you can get hold of the float with a wire through the fill hole, try using a multimeter across the pole going to the sending unit and the other lead across ground. Move the float up and down and watch for ohm (resistance) change on the meter. This will not give accuracy assurance because there is no data that I have to tell me what the range should be, but it will tell if the resistor is working. If it is your guage is more than likely shot, if not try replacing sending unit. Either way, I find when I tackle these type of things, I end up replacing the whole shooting match. My patience wears thin at times and I guess sometimes overides good trouble shooting. At least I know when I replace it all it is fixed. Hope this helps some.
