Sad Story

Yesterday was a bad day at my ranch. I was planning on driving my Super C in next weekend's parade. So I thought I should check and change some of the old fluids. Engine and transmission went ok. When I got the front cowling off and checked the steering box, I noticed it was completely empty. Silly me - I filled it up to specs. Then I did a bit more maintenance just to be sure everything else was ok for next weekend.

Came out the next day and had a big puddle of oil all over the floor and my front wheels. Guess I should have thought to put just a little oil in the steering box and make sure it didn't leak. In cleaning up the mess, I decided to jack up the front with my farm jack just a little to clean under the wheels. Guess what - a smooth troweled floor, oil, and a jack don't mix. After a couple pumps on the handle, the jack slipped and punched a big hole in the radiator. I knew there was a reason I have always been careful where I put my hands and feet. There was no personal injury except to my pride.

I thought I had a mess before, but that was before I mixed a couple gallons of anti-freeze with the 80wt oil. Sure wish I had running water in the shop.

Guess I'll be watching all the other tractors in the parade this coming weekend from the sidelines. I'll be the guy with the tin cup collecting money for a new $300 radiator. The old one is too brittle and been patched too many times.

As for my original problem with the leaking steering box, it doesn't look like the casting is cracked or broken. I suppose it is just needs a new seal and gaskets. Anyone else ever had one leak that bad? I mean the steering box not the $#@!&+ radiator...
