You will be on the borderline with your half ton and the 7000 lb trailer. You will need an equalizer hitch, a transmission cooler and an engine oil cooler in addition to the trailer brakes. If you don't have the coolers, you are taking a chance on getting an overheated engine, and burning out your transmission, especially if you have hills. You can tow your H with the combo you stated, but heavier equipment is better. I used to have a 99 chevy 2500 with 6 liter engine. I hauled my MD and another smaller tractor on my 20 ft gooseneck with it. It had the engine oil cooler and manual transmission. Also, a 3.73 rear axle. It definitely needed the 4.10 axle. Greatest distance I ever went with that load (around 13,000 lbs including 4400 for the trailer) was 150 miles. With only the MD(2500 lbs less or so) it was not really a problem except on steeper grades. I always ran in 4th gear of the 5 speed transmission. Some interstate grades required 3rd gear.
About 3 months ago, I traded for a Chevy 2500 HD with the Duramax diesel. I hauled my MD and my Shop mule 550 miles to RPRU with it. On the interstate (even coming out of the East Tenn mountains) I never needed anything below 5th gear out of the 6 speed manual. Most of the time, I was in 6th, even though the owners manual tells you to tow in 5th, it seems better on more level terrain to tow in 6th. With what you want to tow, a Chevy 6 liter 2500 with the tow package and the 4.10 axle will do fine. However, you may end up like me be hauling more than you thought, then you need to upgrade.

Today's Featured Article - The Rescue of a Fordson F - by Anthony West. Introduction I live in the UK and have for many years restored Fordson tractors (in the main model N's). I have also restored and shown model F's, E 27N's, Field Marshall Series 2, David Brown Cropmasters and the old rey Fergeson T 20. At one time I had seven restored examples which were shown and used in ploughing matches. As most restorers, I have a number of war stories I can relate on a range of topics that may help other like minded and interested people. Perhaps my first p ... [Read Article]
