706 Range trans jumps out of gear

Just bought the tractor - jumps out of High and Low range when on slight downhill grade. I replaced bushing in Range shift lever on console which removed the slop there, but the problem still exists. The rest of the linkage, even the short "cub tie rod end" linkage is pretty tight with very little movement of slop. The lower linkage rod at the bottom shows little if any wear. All in all, the shift linkage seems good to me with very little slop, even with all these various potential places for wear. Still, "finding" low and high range feels sloppy and vague - you need to ease out on the clutch to see if it is in a Range gear or not, especially with low without the shroud to tell you were low ought to be. Going from neutral to low it is very easy to pass low completely and when it is in low gear, there is alot of movement in the shift lever. High must be pushed completely forward against the shroud covering the shift levers (and held there on a downhill grade). After pulling the platform to cleanup 40 years of crud, I found that most of the slop seems to be inside the trans case itself. When disconnected from the shift linkage, there is alot of slop in the lever coming out the top of the trans. Previous owner forgot to send the owners manual along ('course it wasn't supposed to jump out of gear either...) It's supposed to be mailed but hasn't gotten here yet and the local IH dealer didn't have one. It seems to me that the trouble is going to be found under the trans cover. I'm going to get a manual one place or the other but would kind of like to get started on this now if I can. The archives mention shift forks being bent or out of adjustment, wear in the shaft or linkage, etc. If I remove the top cover, are the shift forks and it's shaft and linkage connected to the cover - should it lift off pretty easily or is there something under that cover I should know about before I get started? The archives were real helpful but I'm new to IH's and your help would be appreciated - thanks!

Today's Featured Article - Box Plow Blues - by Tom Schwarz. One of the first implements most tractor owners obtain is the box plow. For very little money, this piece of equipment promises to plow and flatten any hill or vale on your ranch road or farm. At least that's what I thought! As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U ... [Read Article]
