One method of cleaning the fuel tank is to have a radiator shop boil it. They soak it like a radiator and then rinse with water several times.

The cost should be $75 to $100 assuming you prep the tank.

You will need to remove the fuel and wash the inside of the tank with a liquid dish detergent several times. You may want to drop a chain into the tank and shake to remove any sludge. Be careful to secure the chain so that it does fall in to the tank.

Treat the fuel with Heet (yellow bottle) or similar to remove residual water once installed.

The downside is that the process removes paint. In addition, if the corrosion is severe, it may eventually eat through the sheet metal regardless if the tank was cleaned or not. This in fact happened to me.

Another alternative is to purchase a replacement tank through a salvage yard. You may luck out find one in good condition. See if the seller will warrantee it for at least a year or see. You will need the tractor serial number and/or year to find the correct replacement.

There are other solutions. One of which is an acid etch/coating kit. The thought is to clean the tank and then apply a protective coating. Supposedly it will stop leaks. However, if the corrosion is not removed it will be trapped between the coating and sheet metal. Your local auto parts store or radiator shop may be possible source.
