Farmall 100 problem

I bought a Farmall 100 as is not running. the stator is removed. I take the hand crank & turn the motor over about 10 complete rounds & then it locks up tight solid & can not turn it over. Reach in the stator hole with a bar turn the motor backwards about half around then take the hand crank & the motor will turn over about 10 rounds & locks up tight again.& again & again. Any Ideas I need help I do not understand this
