Tyler, Are you attacking this from the wrong side? The nut on the back of the bracket should be held kept from turning by the sides of the slot it rides in. You shouldn't have to do anything on the back side except hold or wedge it in place when youi've got it where you want it. The tightening is done on the first nut you see in front of the bracket (still behind the fan itself). There should be enough space there to get a regular open end wrench onto it.
