I never had the shifter off or the forks off for that matter. The problem now is that while I have forced the whole mess up enough to manage working in there, I will be dipped if that overhead crap will be removed again. Been there done that all once. What I dont understand is if the forks can get out of sinc. with the shifter putting the thing on somehow. Can't see how really since they are hooked together permenantly in there but it just doesn't seem right. I have it in N and slide each gear into line with the associated fork. Of course my wonderous book glosses over the thing completely. If it is supposed to be in some gear to put it on I don't know about it. At least I can trial and error it in 10 minute turnarounds by leaving everything loose and prying it up with a 2 by 4. Any little tricks I sure would like to hear them. As you can guess trannys aren't my strong suite.
