I had a nice '67 BSA Spitfire MKIII. One con rod bearing was gone and allowed the piston skirt to smack on the flywheel. The piston skirt and the cylinder skirt broke. I heared the tapping for awhile, but didn't know what it was. To make things worse, the broken pieces went over to the good piston, got in between it and the flywheel and broke that piston and cylinder skirt too. You should have heared those pieces rattling around. I was able to ride it home. (Ah, the wisdom of youth!) I was able to get new jugs and pistons, hence my first lesson in expensive engine repair.
