Your local PPG paint supplier should be able to set you up with a mask for around $30 to $40. I think the last one I bought (replaceable filters) was around $40 or so. Be SURE to wear the mask at ALL times! I painted a little bit without one last summer and was sick for a month (no voice and sore throat).

I paint inside our shop/storage shed. 1/2 of it has cement floor. In your case I would buy some cheap clear plastic or find old tarps to lay down on the floor to avoid kicking up dust.

Humidity and temp will very much affect drying. You should not paint under 70 degrees F. There are different reducers that have different drying times for the varying temperatures. There is one for 70 and 85 degrees for sure and also one between those. I like using the 70 because the slower it dries the more shine you get, but this gives more time for bugs, dust, etc.

I enjoy using our HVLP gun, however we did an excellent job with our $20 "touch up" gun on my 51 IH pickup. My advise is to buy some cheap (farm and fleet store) paint and thinner if you have never painted before and practice on old tin or cardboard to get the spray pattern set right. Once you are comfortable with the gun switch to the good stuff and test a little bit on scrap metal again. Always remember, if you mess up you can wait until it dries, sand it down and apply another coat.

As for specific painting procedures, your local supplier should be able to help you out - mine gave me several sheets explaining what to do and what not to do. Very helpful to have. If I can find them I can scan them in and email them to you if you like. Feel free to email me if you have more questions.

Steven
