HELP! I need to unstick my 300U adjustable axle!

I have a 300 Utility with the adjustable front axle. It has been in the narrow position ever since it was new, I assume. And now I want to set it out some for row cropping, because the tires ride almost right on 38" rows. I got all the bolts out of it, but now I cannot get the two sliding pieces to slide out. They are rusted in I think. I have thought about heating it up some, but I think it is too big to heat with an acetalyne torch evenly. And I am also worried that after heating it, it may contract to a point smaller than it is now, worsening the situation. I have also thought of torching the main tube open, taking the sliding pieces out, and then welding the main tube back together. Do any of you have any ideas on how to fix it without going to this extreme??????
