I guess there are several things that could cause the backfire but I would check in this order. Double check the firing order and your spark plug wires and if you are sure it is firing at the right time, I would take off the valve cover and see if there is a loose rocker arm caused by a stuck valve. I have had good luck with stuck valves by making a liberal application of lubricant on the stem and pecking it down with a SMALL hammer and prying up with two pry bars until it cooperates. If it is firing with the valve open, it is burning in the intake instead of the engine.
