is there any way to tell if the TA is bad on a dead tractor?

I'm looking at buying a 400 and I'm afaid the guy might not be telling me everything. What makes me suspect is he told me the tractor was running only 4 years ago, but I know that the tree growing up around the back axle took alot longer than 4 years to get there!. thanks, Jonathan
