IH400 - 2 bolt or 3 bolt starter?

Never had noticed until the other day that my 400 has a three bolt starter. For some reason I thought that 3 bolts was deisel and 2 bolts were gas. Is this true? If so, my 400 has had a gas engine put in it. ID tag so faded it's no help. Thanks.
