Sounds like the generator is trying to supply too many amps for too long a time. I would put a good volt meter across the battery and measure the voltage with the tractor not running. Then start the tractor and measure it while running. Maybe the regulator is trying to overcharge it? How good is your wiring? If the field of the generator becomes grounded, it will go to full charge and stay there no matter what the regulator wants it to do. You may want to look at it to make sure everything is wired right.
